Tropical Crop + LookMazing’s Who Wore It Best.

I’m excited to have been selected to take part in LookMazing‘s Who Wore It Best contest!

LookMazing is a fashion + beauty social shopping site that connects bloggers with shoppers. Bloggers tag the items featured in their photos, making it easy for readers to shop a look.

So what am I styling as part of the Who Wore It Best challenge? This Topshop crop top.

When it arrived, I realized immediately it was a super crop. (We’re talking full belly here, folks, not just your average shortened hemline.) It was also quite fitted + sporty. I wanted to balance that aesthetic with something ladylike on the bottom: enter this voluminous midi skirt. The skirt provides more coverage, which makes the crop more wearable. Black doesn’t compete with the fun tropical print of the crop, both pieces are made from the same scuba material (cohesion!), and the skirt’s length keeps the focus on the cool neckline up top.

Accessories? Bright green mirrored Ray-Ban sunglasses, layered crystal statement necklaces, and strappy color block sandals. I love the bit of green at the toe; it ties everything in without being distracting.

And here we have it:

Keep It Separate.

The Zara sale was quite fruitful for me. (When is it not?) This shorts suit is my fave from the haul. I love the almost-matching checked print, scuba material, and the wide ruffle at the hem. Coordinating separates are big right now, but I know I’ll dig these pieces broken up as part of other outfits as much as I like them matched together.

I wore the shorts suit with my trusty leopard pumps (I reach for these puppies so frequently, and I’m not even embarrassed), a sparkly statement necklace, and that Gorjana cuff from the Courtney Loves Gorjana collection I can’t seem to take off.

All hail the mighty 3-day weekend! How am I getting 4th of July ready? These killer mirrored Ray Bans put me in a pretty festive mood.

What do you guys think? Are separates your thing? I’m pumped to put this boxy top with a pair of super skinny jeans, and the shorts with a loose, floaty camisole. Edit, revamp, repeat.

Just Dandy.

Another day, another jumpsuit. This one from Dandy Boutique is a gem: strappy and backless, lightweight, all in a cool black and white tribal print. I paired it with gladiator flats and gold jewelry for an easy date night outfit, but I envision this jumpsuit working just as easily with a white strong-shouldered blazer for the office.

I love short work weeks, don’t you? My office is pretty quiet (typically, knock on wood), which allows me to plow through some outstanding tasks and loose ends before enjoying a long weekend. Here’s hoping this week is quick ‘n painless so we can all get to celebrating the 4th!

Laser Cut + The Vanity: NovaWhite.

“I have one simple request. And that is to have sharks with frickin’ laser beams attached to their heads.” -Dr. Evil

(An Austin Powers reference to kick off Friday Eve? Yeah, I’ll go there anytime.)

I scored these adorable laser cut shorts at Dandy Boutique when I was in Charleston for Giant Conference last week. (As if I could resist a little shopping, even on a business trip.) I was drawn to the cute laser cut detailing and the scalloped hem; not your basic black shorts, but still super easy to wear. I bought ‘em a size up to maximize the slouch factor, and paired them with a printed Anthropologie tee last seen styled for the office for their inaugural run.

It’s a t-shirt and shorts, people. So simple and comfy, but the style factor gets a buzz from the bright pumps, fun print on the tee, detailing on the shorts, and a sparkly statement necklace. It’s all in the details.

The Vanity: NovaWhite Review.

What girl (guy, person, human being) doesn’t want a brighter smile? I’ve whitened my teeth periodically for years to keep things on the white ‘n bright, so I was more than game when NovaWhite reached out with the opportunity to try their whitening gel.

What I like to see? 22%. NovaWhite’s whitening gels are 22% carbamide peroxide (CP), and that’s legit bleaching power. You can’t find this in your standard white strips, that’s for sure.

novawhite 22% whitening gel

The package came with a set of dental trays that mold to your mouth. (You boil water, dunk for 10-15 seconds, pop in your mouth, and bite down to form to your teeth.) The custom fit trays ensure the whitening gel gets in all those little cracks and crevices. When you’re ready to bleach, run a thin line of the whitening gel along the bottom front of each tray and you’re 15-30 minutes away from a whiter smile. (Bonus: the whitening gel is mint-flavored, which means no gross aftertaste.)

You can use the gels daily, but pay attention if you notice sensitivity after bleaching. My teeth are fairly sensitive, so I started with 15-minute whitening sessions every other day. I upped it to about 20 minutes every day for a little over a week.

A few tips I’ve learned from bleaching:

  • Don’t overfill the trays with gel. A little bleach goes a long way, and you don’t want the bleach to sit on the gums (which can cause irritation).
  • Be careful to avoid dark/colorful foods and beverages during the first 24 hours after whitening. The CP gel temporarily opens the pores in your teeth, and until these pores close again your teeth are more susceptible to stains. Steer clear of red wine, coffee, tea, dark sodas, mustard, etc., for about 24 hours after a whitening round.
  • Don’t be afraid to take a break. If you’re sensitive after a whitening session, take a day or two off.
  • Maintenance is key. The whitening effect won’t last forever; you’ll likely have to bleach periodically to maintain that bright new smile of yours.
  • Store unused whitening gels in a cool, dark place. Better yet: toss those bad boys in a plastic bag and place ‘em in your fridge. That will keep them ready to roll for up to 18 months.

My results? Here are before and after shots taken about a week apart. I can definitely tell a difference; my smile is a bit brighter, and I think that will only progress the longer I whiten.

Oui, Oui.

There’s something very French about basic blue stripes, no?

This classic print gets a bit of an update when it comes in crop top form and paired with a quilted circle skirt + bright blue platform pumps. The best part? Both the top and skirt are by H&M and clock in at a combined total of $25. The top isn’t online anymore (check your local stores!) but the skirt is. Not a bad date night outfit, am I right?

Love the combo of a crop top with a high-waisted skirt. It means just a peek of skin rather than a full Britney-midriff, and makes this outfit acceptable in more venues. Except Vegas. Almost anything goes in Vegas, including 2k14 Britney.

I actually cannot believe it’s already the end of the June– summer is flying by! It’s all AC and hunting for shady spots to shoot in from here. Check back Thursday, when another installment of The Vanity goes live on the blog + some dressy shorts I’m all about.

Thanks to Paige at Life’s a Party Dress Like It for having me as their featured blogger for this week’s Stylish Tuesday Link Up. :)

Orange You Glad.

I’m all about oranges, corals, and neons this summer. Can’t seem to get enough (as evidenced here and here, and oh yeah, here). Keeping with the theme, I picked this dress up at KC Garment District a few weeks back. The super simple cut with a drawstring waist, floaty fabric that doesn’t cling (or wrinkle) in the heat, and a freshly-squeezed orange color make it easy to wear when the temperatures are spiking 90º+ in Kansas City. (Also, welcome back, big hair!)

To complete the look: a pair of strappy white sandals, my favorite necklace of all time, and a few bangles. I don’t know about you, but my heavy statement necklaces and stacks of bracelets get put on the back burner when it’s fry-an-egg-on-any-surface hot outside.

Kansas City girls, have you checked out KC Garment District? Great selection, much of which is totally reasonably priced (I think I paid $60 or so for the dress above, for example), and an awesome atmosphere (they have a BAR in the center). They’re at 13th and Main downtown; you should drop by!

Cheers to Thursday, ladies ‘n gents. Hope you have a lovely weekend ahead!

Olympic Neon + The Vanity: TRIND.

First up, thanks to everyone for swinging by yesterday for my #RealBloggerBeauty post. It was cool to share with you guys, and even cooler of Maya to include me in the collaboration. If you haven’t had a chance to read some of the stories shared by my fellow bloggers, head over and check ‘em out.

If Jem (of Hologram fame) went dressed as an Olympic figure skater for Halloween, she would wear this dress. J.Lo totally wore this first (and better, truthfully, because homegirl’s body is crazy) on an episode of Idol, I believe. I had to have it because it was a) super affordable and b) super ridiculous. Also known as my fave fashion combo. Jem might call it outrageous, and I’d agree.

Styling this number is an exercise in restraint. The dress is already so much, which meant I needed to keep it tame elsewhere. A nude sandal with a hint of neon piping was an interesting-but-still-safe choice, and the hair needed to go up in a topknot to give top billing to the high neckline + lace detailing. No jewelry, just a hint of a bold lip (in that no-budge long-wear formula I’ve been obsessed with recently).

I love it because it’s super loud and feminine. How fun for girl’s night out?

The Vanity: TRIND Review.

Knowing my affinity for brights, TRIND reached out with the opportunity to take their nail products for a test drive. A gorgeous set of ocean-esque polishes, a polish remover, and a keratin treatment and topcoat arrived on my doorstep a few weeks later.

trind nail polish, trind keratin treatment, trind polish remover, the vanity from lsr

Clockwise from top left: Trind Keratin Nail Protector, Keratin Nail Restorer, Nail Lacquer in Surf’s Up, Mint Julep, and Appletini.

I’ve been wearing Mint Julep quite a bit (it’s on my toes in this very post!) and used Surf’s Up to create a fun manicure I featured on my Instagram:

trind nail polish, ashley from lsr,

The scoop on TRIND: TRIND products are fortified with keratin. Keratin is a protein you normally find in hair products to strengthen hair, but TRIND has added it to their formulas so the nails benefit. Brilliant, eh? TRIND’s treatments are free of the harsh chemicals found in some other polishes, meaning you won’t find the potentially dangerous trio of dibutyl phthalate, toluene, and formaldehyde hiding in that amazing fire engine red manicure. (Dibutyl phthalate and toluene are linked with increasing the risk of birth defects in pregnant women, and formaldehyde is a carcinogen.)

The Nail Restorer and Keratin Nail Protector are a combo treatment used to improve the health of your nails. They include the aforementioned miracle protein keratin, and work to restore + add moisture to dry, weak nails. Treat the Nail Restorer almost like you would a cuticle cream; it can brushed on nails as needed. The Keratin Nail Protector is a topcoat containing keratin, so not only are you protecting your polish job when you brush this stuff on, but you’re also giving your nails a strength shot. I’ve been using the Nail Restorer for about a month now and have noticed my nails seem a bit stronger. I love that the treatment dries quickly (means I can swipe it on clean nails and then get back to whatever I’m doing without a mess). The topcoat is nice; it protected and gave a nice shiny finish. I love to start with the restorer formula then follow up with the topcoat for a clean, natural manicure.

The colors I test drove were Appletini, Surf’s Up, and Mint Julep. Very appropriate for the summer season, that’s for sure. I love the shape of the brush handle (ergonomic; feels good in the hand) and the color pay-off was solid. These formulas cover nicely in two thin coats. They didn’t easily chip (especially on toes), although I was careful to reapply a topcoat every other day when I wore ‘em on my hands. (Typing dramatically decreases the life of most manicures, am I right?)

When switching colors, I used TRIND’s polish remover. It’s a mild formula (ie, non-acetone) so I had to scrub a bit to get the polish off, but noticed after the remover dried it left a lovely floral scent behind (as opposed to that strong chemical scent most removers leave you with).

You can buy TRIND products here– go and check out the rest of their color selection! Next on my list is Dark Scarlet and Miss O’Hara!

TRIND sent the nail products for my review; thoughts and opinions are 100% my own.

Getting Real: #RealBloggerBeauty.

There are a lot of things I don’t do.

I don’t do morning workouts, I don’t do Crocs, and I don’t post on Mondays.

And yet here I am, posting on a Monday. But for a really good reason.

real blogger beauty campaign launches june 16th

My friend Maya contacted me last month with the brilliant idea to get a bunch of bloggers talking about getting real. #RealBloggerBeauty, she called it. Whether it was sharing a personal story or talking about what inspires you, the goal was to lift the blogger’s veil and let our readers in, while also supporting our fellow bloggers in arms. And we’d all do it on the same day– today, June 16th– and spread the word.

So what inspires me?

Recently, it’s been getting to know the women behind the blogs I follow. When I first started LSR, it was a nice little creative outlet. An open journal; a catalog of outfits and trends as I interpreted them. But I blogged in a bubble. I didn’t realize bloggers talked to each other (this seems naive– it was). I thought we all just sort of dumped content on the web to be consumed by the nameless, faceless Public. And the whole time, there was an entire community out there I was missing out on.

I met a few local girls who had been blogging longer than I, and that changed everything. All of the sudden there were events to attend and new people to meet. It was exhilarating and eye-opening. So many new faces, so many stories.

Here was a built-in support group I had been completely neglecting. A group of girls who not only knew the struggle of a botched outfit shoot (“I swear, that dress was flattering in the store…”), but who could relate to the pressures of a consistent editorial schedule while balancing a regular social life and full-time 9 to 5 gig. A network of shared experiences, and I was just blindly stumbling along cobbling together outfits in my closet.

There’s a yin to the yang, of course. While most of the girls I’ve met thus far have been nothing short of lovely, there have been a few less-than-stellars. Girls who step on other girls to claw their way to the next sponsored post; bloggers who believe themselves better (for whatever reason) and act accordingly. I don’t really get the ego; in the end: we’re all people who take pictures of ourselves (or our food, or our DIY projects, etc.) and post ‘em on the Internet. As much as I love to blog (and shop, let’s get real), we’re not curing diseases or saving the world (maybe just saving people from Crocs, but that’s beside the point). There’s no need for negativity; we should all be there for each other.

Support is what’s important. The tagline for Maya’s Real Blogger Beauty campaign is: “Because the secret of success is support.”

It’s so true.

You can’t do it alone. The support is what gets you through everything from writer’s block to a particularly bloated week of outfit shooting. It keeps you fresh, keeps you sharp. Keeps you from deleting your WordPress account when your tagging system goes awry and all your content jumbles into Blog Soup.

You get by with a little help from your friends, as the saying goes. I’m learning this, more and more. And these fellow bloggers, these girls all across the country and world, become your friends. Or they should, if you’re doing it right.

What this post really is: a thank you to those I have forged friendships with. Those girls shoot me a fun email out of the blue, who follow me on twitter despite the fact I frequently scream about college basketball, who take my photography-ignorant ass DSLR shopping, who hit up a hotel bar with me until the wee hours of the morning throwing back glasses of wine and reminiscing about the glory days of Jonathan Taylor Thomas, etc. Finding you all has made the past year so much more fulfilling than it would’ve been if I were on my own, blogging in a little Kansas City vacuum.

You inspire me. Your blogs make me want to be better, to keep learning, to keep reaching. You all bring something interesting and worthwhile to the blogging table; girls who are doing for themselves and all that jazz. I love it. It’s beyond rad. So this is my little love song for you.

There are a ton of blogs participating in the #RealBloggerBeauty campaign. Check ‘em out by visiting the link up over at Charmingly Styled.

Happy Monday, dolls!

Bright Tanks and Bralettes.

It’s patio season, that’s for sure. Nothing like sitting outside and enjoying the early summer sunshine with your friends + a few beverages.

Two requirements for patio attire: cute and comfy. You’re bound to be in an Instagram shot or two, so looking put-together is a plus. But you also are subject to the sun and humidity (KC, you muggy little metropolis, you), so comfort is key. Loose-fitting, breezy, check, check, check.

I often reach for a floaty tank, like this bright version from Swell. I love the print– it’s so summer-appropriate. When layered on over a bralette, I basically get away with wearing the lace equivalent of a sports bra out of the house. (Score.) The rest of the look: boyfriend shorts, some signature jewelry, and a pair of cute strappy wedges. A high ponytail keeps my hair from getting too big, thanks very much.

Hope everyone is having a good week. I’m having a blast in Charleston (palm trees! UX! Fellow nerds!) and am en route back to Kansas City tomorrow after an awesome week at Giant.

A big thank you to Jena from I’m Perfectly Human and Aisha at True Soul & Spirit for featuring my day-glo look as their featured outfit this week. Thanks, ladies!

This Dress is Swell + Trend Spin Link Up.

What did I say about the humidity and the size of my hair? It’s big here, guys. Prepare yourselves.

So what’s a girl to wear when it’s hot ‘n humid outside? My go-to: a floaty summer dress in a light color (reflect, sunlight, reflect!) and a pair of easy wedges. I love the cut-out detail on this Swell number, and grabbed a braided belt in almost the same shade of cream to add a little definition at the waist.

Today I’m co-hosting the Trend Spin Link Up with Walking in Memphis in High HeelsThe Fashion Canvas and we’re showcasing our favorite accessories. What’s my fave? Right now it’s the BaubleBar Signature necklace– I’ve had this since early April and reach for it all the time. Love how it really pops against the cream-colored dress.
